----------EDITOR'S NOTE --------------------------------------

Statistics show that more than fifty million Americans have herpes simplex virus (HSV) but they are not aware that they have the disease. A rough estimate, will equate that one out of five adults have the HSV, either 1 or 2, and needs herpes virus treatment. HSV-1 results to cold sores while HSV-2 pertains to genital herpes. The lack of awareness as to how one acquires the disease is one of the reasons why it is fast becoming an epidemic.

The HSV is a double-stranded virus that can enter the body through scraped skin, initially aiming for the epithelial cells or the tissues inside and outside the bodies. Once it infiltrates the body, this will kill the epithelial cells by releasing a clear fluid inside the skin. Small fluid-filled blisters called vesicles will now form inside the skin and merge with the other cells of the body to create multinucleated giant cells. Hence, there is now a need for a herpes virus treatment.

Although there is no known cure yet for HSV, there are a lot of medications available to choose from. The most common ones are the valacyclovir, famciclovir, and the acyclovir. Herbal medicines like thyme, sage, rosemary, and lemon balm are also available in case cost is a consideration for the treatment.

At the onset of a genital herpes outbreak, an antiviral medication like oral acyclovir is usually recommended in case the afflicted shows systemic symptoms or signs of immunity compromised hosting. This means the HSV can spread the disease in different body parts because of impaired immunity systems. Topical acyclovir will be an added medication to further reduce viral shredding. The use of this medicine will cause crusting of the lesions thus shortening the latter’s duration. In severe cases of infection, acyclovir medication may be administered intravenously to produce an immediate and direct effect.

The recommended dosage in the use of acyclovir as herpes virus treatment in the initial stage of genital herpes is 200 mg taken five times in a day for a period of ten days. However, this does not a guarantee the complete elimination of the HSV.

As a precautionary measure, always visit your doctor for prescription and medication updates.
