----------EDITOR'S NOTE --------------------------------------
There are three genital herpes medications that are as effective in the cure of genital herpes as antiviral medications. The three medications are famcyclovir, valacyclovir and acyclovir. The first antiviral medication for antiviral infection including the herpes virus is acyclovir. Acyclovir works by restricting the replication process and additional increase of the virus in infecting the other cells. However, this drug has no effect on the cells previously affected by the virus. Valacyclovir works by reducing the symptoms of the virus while famcyclovir works almost similar to acyclovir.
Initial Outbreak
When there is the initial genital herpes outbreak which might be severe and prolonged in nature, the following oral genital herpes medications are applied:
1. Doses of Acyclovir 400 mg at three times a day for period of 5 days
2. Doses of Acyclovir 800 mg at three times a day for a period of 2 days
3. Doses of Acyclovir 800 mg given twice a day for a period of 5 days
4. Doses of Famciclovir 125 mg given twice a day for a period of 5 days
5. Doses of Famciclovir 1000mg given twice a day for a period of 1 day
6. Doses of Valacyclovir 500 mg given twice a day for a period of 3 days
7. Doses of Valacyclovir 1000 mg given once a day for a period of 5 days
Recurring Outbreaks- Episodic Treatment Required
There is recurring genital herpes outbreak if there are at least 6 outbreaks during a particular year. One way of handling the disease is through episodic treatment wherein medications are taken as soon as the symptoms surface and aims to cure only the current episode without effect to subsequent recurrences.
Recurring outbreaks require genital herpes medications as follows:
1. Doses of Acyclovir 400 mg twice in a day
2. Doses of Famciclovir 250 mg twice in a day
3. Doses of Valacyclovir 500 mg once in a day
4. Doses of Valacyclovir 1000 mg once in a day
For Discordant Couples- Suppressive Treatment is Needed
Discord in couples arise when the other partner has genital herpes while the other remains unsure if the health condition is in the positive or negative. In this scenario, the genital herpes medication is a daily dose of 500 mg of valacyclovir to reduce the rate of infection. If one partner is positively diagnosed with genital herpes, it is strongly suggested that sex activity should be discouraged. If not applicable, the use of condom is appropriate.
In case of any doubt about the other partner, it is wise that both of the partner should visit their doctor for the appropriate treatment and medication. It is just a waste of time, money, and medication if the other partner is treating the disease while the other is continuously infecting the other. Aside from this, limiting the sex partner will contain the infection. Otherwise, no amount of genital herpes medication can treat the disease.
Alternative Medicine
Aside from the traditional medicines mentioned, famcyclovir, valacyclovir and acyclovir, alternative medicines were proven to elicit the same effect as genital herpes medications. They include the likes of bee products, eleuthero, echinacea, zinc and lysine as examples which can suppress or treat genital herpes. A certain study disclosed that one of the products of bees which is propolis had an improved healing quality when this was compared to acyclovir. Propolis is the sticky substance produced by bees from tree saps. The initial finding sounds promising but requires further studies and hope is within the grasp of humanity which may only be in the few years ahead.
