Researchers are currently working overnight just to find new ways to cure herpes, especially genital herpes. Everybody is scrambling to get the credit for the vaccine but only one so far showed promising results in the experimental stage. In year 2000, a particular vaccine was reported by researchers to have protected women from being infected by the genital herpes or HSV-2. As reported, said women were not at all infected by any type of the herpes virus. However, the vaccine proved ineffective to those women who were previously infected by the HSV-1 or oral herpes. Scientists are looking for microbicides as another new way to cure herpes. Microbicides are chemicals that aim to protect the body from infection by killing the bacteria and viruses (microbes) even before they can penetrate the body. One particular product being sold in the market claims that when applied to the vagina, it can kill the herpes virus and other sexually transmitted diseases caused by viruses. This, however, has scientific basis as backing.
Another new way to cure herpes and being looked into by scientists is a drug that will prevent the herpes virus from replicating. For the virus to replicate, it has to copy exactly its own DNA.
In every clinical trial, the experimental drug should be taken by thousands of volunteer patients. This is under the watchful eye of the FDA and a review board that is independent in every aspect. The researchers have to follow some set of rules to be scientifically correct and ethically sound. The rules also apply to the volunteers whose rights are protected in case they want to back out.
Although there are risks in joining clinical trials, the advantage is that you will be the first to benefit from the new “wonder drug” before it hits the market. New ways to cure herpes are undergoing clinical trials and you can derive the benefit in case you decide to join one. You can ask your doctor if there are ongoing clinical trials that need volunteers in your location.
